What Is Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)?

How long have you been around?

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) awards special monthly compensation (SMC) to veterans with service-connected conditions so severe that they warrant a rating higher than 100 percent. The idea is that certain disabilities or combinations of disabilities are more debilitating than accounted for by the regular rating schedule.

Important Information About 2027 VA Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)

The 2027 SMC rates are estimates based on the confirmed 3.6% COLA. Final amounts may differ slightly once the VA publishes its official rates and the required legislation is completed.

SMC is a tax-free benefit for veterans with qualifying service-connected disabilities. Depending on the level, it may supplement or replace regular VA disability compensation.

Understanding SMC Levels

  • SMC-K: An additional monthly payment of approximately $145 in 2027, available even at a 0% disability rating for qualifying loss or loss of use of a hand, foot, eye, hearing, or reproductive organ. This may include service-connected erectile dysfunction.

  • SMC-S (Housebound): Available to veterans with a single 100% service-connected disability plus separate disabilities rated at least 60%, or those who meet the requirements for being permanently housebound.

  • SMC-L through R.2: Higher compensation for severe service-connected disabilities, loss of use of limbs, blindness, or the need for regular assistance with daily activities such as dressing, bathing, eating, and personal care. Certain higher levels require specialized daily care.

How to Apply for SMC

The VA must consider SMC when the evidence reasonably raises eligibility, even if the veteran has not specifically requested it (Akles v. Derwinski).

However, veterans should review their benefits and request consideration if they believe they qualify. For Aid and Attendance or Housebound benefits, use VA Form 21-2680. Other SMC categories may require different supporting evidence or claims.
